Blood & Granite II: The Crime & Punishment Tour
It’s the sequel! This tour looks at how we dealt with criminals from the medieval period to the last public hanging in 1857 of John Booth for stabbing his mother-in-law Janet Galloway to death.
Covering the witch burnings of 1596/7, the minor punishments dealt out to pickpockets, vandals, and gossips, how we beat the French to the invention of the guillotine which was misused for the unofficial execution of Francis Hay in 1615.
Learn where the hangman’s house was situated; of how Mary, Queen of Scots had to witness the botched beheading of her favourite, John Gordon, in the middle of the Castlegate; of the murderous dinner party at Pitfodel’s Lodging; the execution of John Booth; death in the Green and an insight into Aberdeen’s 19th century jails.
