Each month will see a classic album presented by pro audio engineer Haden Boardman, followed by interpretations of classic tracks by talented house jazz band Pretty Standard.
On the iconic Blue Note record label, Kenny Burrell's 1963 album Midnight Blue personifies everything that is great and good about the Blue Note label, and the classic Rudy Van Gelder produced Blue Note sound. Featuring Burrell on guitar, Stanley Turrentine on Tenor Sax, Major Holley on double bass, Bill English on drums and Ray Barretto on conga. Although the 88 year old Kenny Burrell is still with us, it seems few Jazz aficionados know his sound. Its smooth, sophisticated, upbeat and of course bluesy jazz! Midnight Blue is a masterpiece. The recording is 'alive': Van Gelder using his own home as a recording studio at the time, with the finest Neumann microphones and minimal mixing or added effects, and absolutely no overdubbing. The sound is phenomenal.
As usual, we encourage you to bring your own vinyl to play on our amazing vintage valve and horn speaker sound system, featuring Technics SP10 broadcast deck, with fully active bi amped valve electronics. Hear your own records like never before! Come early to avoid disappointment, you'll find us in The Holding Cell (within The Bailiff Bar at The Old Courts) Wigan.
