The Machine: Third Angel Theatre
Third Angel return to the Crucible Studio with an in–the–round theatre production of Georges Perec’s innovative and mischievous 1968 radio play, the first ever production of this remarkable piece in English.
The Machine is a subtle comedy about language, meaning, thought and silence, explored through the deconstruction of Goethe’s poem The Ramblers Lullaby II. An inventive, irreverent and intoxicating linguistic dissection of the poem, the play uses computer programming protocols, randomisation, Beckett, algebra, French, proverbs, Italian, Lewis Caroll, geography, biography, Nietzsche, Napoleon, Schopenhauer, Verlain, Schiller, Rimbaud, Brecht, Dickenson, Neruda, Borges, German, Kirkegaard and KFC to achieve its goal.
Third Angel was formed in Sheffield twenty years ago by Rachael Walton and Alexander Kelly with the aim to make contemporary performance that speaks directly, honestly and engagingly to its audience and explores the small, intimate things in life: the value of individual experience, the beauty to be found in the tiny details of everyday life, and the surprising emotional power of memories and places.
The company has shown work at festivals and venues across the UK, Europe and beyond, most recently in Brussels, Beirut, Rio de Janeiro and Washington DC.
Third Angel also runs a respected mentoring programme, working with early career artists to develop both their professional practice on and off stage, offers young people the chance to gain their Arts Award, and works in a variety of education settings.
