Music In The Round: Schumann: Ensemble 360
Schumann Fantasiestücke Op.73 for double bass and piano
Chopin Nocturne in D flat Op.27 No.2 for piano
Prokofiev Sonata for Flute and Piano in D Op.94
Schumann’s well-loved Fantasiestücke is played on many different instruments, and here is transformed on the double bass. Each movement has its own character and mood: nostalgia, tender and expressive; relaxation, light and playful; vigour, fiery and passionate.
The first of his nocturnes to be published as a pair, Chopin’s popular Op.27 complement each other beautifully: the feverish intensity of the first is contrasted by the serene lyricism of the second, heard here.
Prokofiev’s luminous Sonata for Flute and Piano radiates with optimism and joy, and it is hard to believe it was written during the years that the composer was evacuated from his home country during World War II. It opened to astonishing success in Moscow, its playful elegance and sparkling lines delighting audiences.

Ensemble 360 has quickly gained an enviable reputation across the UK not only for the quality and integrity of the members’ playing, but also for their ability to communicate the music to a range of different audiences.
Formed in 2005, eleven musicians of international standing came together to take up residency in Sheffield with Music In The Round, establishing a versatile group comprising five string players, five wind players and a pianist. The members believe in concerts being informal, friendly and relaxed occasions, and perform 'in the round' wherever possible. Having an audience on all four sides brings with it an intimacy and immediacy between musician and audience that other layouts cannot match.
'Eleven international musicians, brimming with body and soul with passion, vitality and virtuosity, whose performances never cease to amaze' (The Independent)
'The emotional chemistry was manifestly unusual... pure magic' (The Sunday Telegraph).
