Over half of the population of Sierra Leone are children…This statistic is capable of inspiring both horror and optimism in those who hear it. Following the civil war over 50% of the people now living in Sierra Leone are under 18… Children determined to create a better, brighter future for themselves and their families. There is enough food. There is substantial mineral wealth and the third largest natural harbour in the world from which to export it - and yet 70% of the population live in poverty.
On the 19th of November a spectacular show will take place at London’s Hammersmith Apollo – hosted by award winning comedian Marcus Brigstocke – presenting the cream of the UK’s comedy and music talent with all proceeds going to Street Child Sierra Leone – who’s aim is to take children off the streets. Re-building their trust in adults. Reconciling the children with their families and communities or settling them in alternative loving environments and empowering families to care for themselves.
In June 2012 Marcus’ brother Henry was one of 386 runners to take part in the world’s first ever marathon in the searing heat of Sierra Leone - raising £230,000 for Street Child projects.
Marcus and Henry Brigstocke are now taking this fundraising effort in a new direction with a gala night of comedy and music.
Please note that the artists appearing may be subject to change.
This event takes place at Eventim Apollo, which has achieved Bronze Status for disabled access from Attitude Is Everything.
Marcus began his comedy career in Bristol whilst studying drama at University and soon won the BBC New Comedian of 1996 at the Edinburgh Festival. He is now regarded as a major comedy, writing and acting talent, performing stand up nationally to sell out audiences both on tour and on the well trodden comedy circuit. The master of satirical comedy, Marcus has proved to be blisteringly funny over a wide range of topics.
