Little Match Girl: Meow Meow
The cat is back, and you won't believe where she's been.
Having starred in Kneehigh Theatre's West End hit 'The Umbrellas of Cherbourg', international sensation Meow Meow takes up residency at Southbank Centre, with a sizzling show that will defrost even the coldest of hearts.
Hans Christian Andersen's bittersweet fable is just a springboard into the wild realms of theatrical possibility. As our despairing Match Girl staves off the cruel cold of winter with her dwindling supply of flames, she turns to her dreams and the light of the stars to find a way home. With claws of humour and heartache, pathos and irreverence, Meow carves a tuneful trail through the icy reaches of the modern soul.
Collaborating with Australia's Malthouse Theatre Artistic Director Marion Potts, composer Iain Grandage, the Wild Dog Orchestra and the ever-dexterous Chris Ryan, Meow and her team create a fantastical flight of fancy with the darkest of edges.
Little Match Girl received rave reviews during its sold-out run at Sydney Festival earlier this year and this UK premiere runs for 21 performances only.
For ages 15 and over.
'There are not many women who can stun an audience into pin-drop silence with an exquisitely delivered torch song one moment and rock the rafters with laughter the next. Meow Meow is that rare combination - devilishly funny bones and heavenly vocal chords.' **** (London Evening Standard)
'Witness the birth of a new star. She is sensational.' ***** (The Times)
'Leaving audiences dangling helplessly at her feet, the postmodern international diva proved that the world is her litterbox.' (Time Out New York)
'cabaret diva of the highest order' (The New York Post)
