Pyramus and Thisbe, Dido and Aeneas
A superb, semi-staged Baroque double-bill of star-crossed lovers, performed by brilliant young singers. Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, first performed in 1689, is probably the world’s favourite opera in English. Based on Book IV of Virgil’s epic poem The Aeniad, it tells of the tragic love of Dido, Queen of Carthage for Aeneas, Prince of Troy.
With a cast of sailors, witches and a mesmerising Sorceress (sung here by the operatic star Hilary Summers), it remains transcendently beautiful and noble; Dido’s final lament When I am Laid in Earth seems unlikely to lose its status as one of the greatest Baroque arias.
