The fascinating story of the development of the Westonbirt House and how Robert Stayner Holdford was able to create such an amazing house and arboretum.
Angela Potter was a pupil at Westonbirt School and has known Westonbirt for a great many years, but only recently has researched its history.
She presents an intriguing tale of how a little Gloucestershire hamlet, mentioned in the Domesday book, became the setting for the National Arboretum and an extravagantly appointed stately home (now Westonbirt School) with a Grade1* listed garden; both of which can now be visited.
Angela’s talk will endeavour to enlighten you and to explain how young Robert Stayner Holford inherited a fortune and put his money, extraordinary talent and expertise into developing a landscape, an arboretum, and a magnificent ‘Tudor’ country house in the 1860s.
