Nell sells oranges in the theatre and gives as good as she gets from hecklers in the audience. Charles Hart sees she has a natural aptitude for acting, and says he will teach her. There is outrage that a woman will be on stage, but the King has decreed his approval. After an initial bout of stage fright, Nell proves to be a great success.
King Charles sees her perform and wants her for his mistress. But Nell drives a hard bargain, making him offer more than he intended.However they fall in love, and the rest, as they say, is history!
