Mozart’s Violin Concerto is one of those pieces where you hear it and go ‘Oh it’s this one!’ It’s famed for the delicate beauty of its solo violin part and the sparkling exchanges between soloist and orchestra which absolute fizz with musical energy. Schubert’s most popular symphony starts proceedings with a poignancy that seems quite out of a place for the teenager that wrote it, while Beethoven’s Second Symphony ends the evening in lively upbeat style.
