Get Creative Family Arts Festival: FolkActive Workshop
Step in to Hampshire breathing new life into local folk traditions! Have fun drumming with your feet! FolkActive will introduce you to Hampshire traditions of step dancing and broom dancing, all with live music.
Long before STOMP's dazzling routines, ordinary people were dancing with brooms and beating out rhythms with their feet. A hundred years ago step dancing, or “stepping”, was probably the most widespread of all British folk dance forms because it could happen anywhere and anyone could do it. People step danced on street corners, at family parties, pubs, fairs and festivals: all you needed were feet, and tunes which could be whistled, sung or played. Stepping is the ancestor of tap and street dance!
They’ll teach some simple heel and toe moves to start with but this dance style is all about listening to the music and being creative with rhythms. Before long they hope to have a room full of independent steppers. They’ll also teach the steps for a broom dance to rival some of STOMP’s moves!
Wear shoes with hard soles so you can hear your feet: they’ll provide the music and the brooms.
One ticket entitles one adult and one child to participate. Additional single children or adults should purchase a ticket at full price.
