The Big Boulder
Heeley Development Trust have teamed up with music promoters Four Rivers to create a fantastic party that will truly pop the cork on some wonderful new facilities that are free for all to enjoy. “The Big Boulder” takes its name from the iconic climbing boulder loved by the city’s climbers of all ages, from the local youngsters working out their own way to the top to the most seasoned professionals. Like the boulder itself, the party will take place in the newly enhanced Heeley Millennium Park and in another parallel, will offer a musical opportunity for local teenagers Tandem, making their first steps as performers through to seasoned festival thrillers Orchestre Ruffanti who feature some of the best in the business. It is intended that this feast of roots music will become an annual event, with ambitious programming boosting creativity in what is already a highly creative community.
The park, Sheffield’s largest community owned and managed space, has undergone an exciting transformation over the past 12 months, with a grant from the Big Lottery Community Spaces programme.
The grant and the subsequent work is the result of over 10 years work by dedicated staff at Heeley Development Trust, who have had ownership since 1996. Impressive new features include swings in the playground, a woodland mountain bike trail and BMX pump track, and a community orchard, in addition to landscaping and planting work across the space. Further attractions including a series of new climbing boulders, discovery trails, picnic areas and a multi-use games area are still to come this autumn, making the park a real source of local pride and a popular place to visit for those outside the area. Already this summer the park has been heaving with families, keen to try out the new facilities or to simply enjoy sitting in the sun.
Providing the perfect soundtrack to the September sun will be the youthful funk ‘n’ roll of Tandem; the southern blues and soaring harmonies of Rita Payne; uplifting acoustic anthems from The Silver Darlings; dreamy harmonic hypno-folksters Garforth and Myers; pulsating passion from the otherworldly Sieben; and rounding off the perfect party, Orchestre Ruffanti who will be getting everybody on their feet with their radical salsa reconstruction of hits as diverse as Sunshine Of Your Love and Tainted Love with more pzazz than you can shake a feather boa at.
City centre venue Penelope’s will be providing a bar to quench the thirst, and some of the finest purveyors of festival food will be on hand to fill the stomach while the music satisfies the soul!
