The Mikado

The Mikado, or “The Town of Titipu," was produced at the Savoy Theatre on 14 March, 1885 and proved to be one of the most famous of all the Gilbert and Sullivan Operas, running, as it did, for 672 nights.

Nanki-Poo, a wandering Minstrel who a year previously had fallen in love with Yum-Yum, has returned to the town of Titipu to claim her as his true love. Nanki-Poo however has a dark secret - he is the son of The Mikado and is betrothed to Katisha, an elderly lady who apparently has a right elbow that few can possibly resist! His father, The Mikado, had already bethrothed Nanki-Poo to Katisha and is visiting the town of Titipu in search of his son and to also see that they have been carrying out their duties.

With all the wonderful G and S twists and an outstanding musical score you can clearly see why this is the most popular G and S opera.
