Tchaikovsky Symphony No.5

The mesmerising Greek virtuoso Leonidas Kavakos plays Sibelius’s passionate and romantic violin concerto, a work which launched his international career and of which he is a celebrated performer. The LPO has formed a dynamic partnership with Vladimir Jurowski – now in his eighth year as Principal Conductor – and, after the critical and popular success of their inaugural Saffron Hall concert last year, they return with another inspirational season-opener. In addition to Oliver Knussen’s delicate, impressionistic arrangements of piano pieces by Scriabin, they perform Tchaikovsky’s extravagantly dramatic Fifth Symphony, which will not only be the first Tchaikovsky symphony to be heard in Saffron Hall, but also an ideal showcase for the superb brass section.
