Gordon Hendricks - The King's Voice
“Over the years I have heard many Presley impersonators but when Gordon started to sing, I actually shivered.” Geoff Morrow, Elvis’ songwriter. In Stoke on Trent in the early seventies, a young Gordon Hendricks played to an imaginary crowd. Harmonizing his voice to a constant soundtrack, played on repeat by his sisters. The music was Rock n Roll. The Artist was Elvis. Little did he know back then that his performance in his potteries home would lead to a phenomenal career impersonating The King, working with his legendary musicians in years to come. Performing by public demand Karaoke led to a performance on ITV’s ‘Stars in their Eyes’ where he rose from runner-up to series champion winning by a record number of votes. Watched by over 12 million viewers astounded by their ears and eyes. And it wasn’t just the public. Elvis’ own songwriter Geoff Morrow was watching. A man who’s penned lyrics for many of the music hall of fame’s greatest, including The Carpenters, Billy Fury, and Barry Manilow. So touched by Gordon’s voice that “recaptured the spirit of the song”, Geoff signed Gordon to his Yellow Records label, and the two recorded and released “Where Will I Be”, a song originally written for Elvis in 1977 but he sadly passed before he could record it. Gordon’s voice has earned many accolades from artists who worked with Elvis including achieving his lifetime ambition of working with The Sweet Inspirations and Elvis’ original drummer D J Fontana at ‘The World’s Greatest Elvis in Concert’ at the Bolton Arena in August 08. And this was just the beginning…2011 saw even greater success when on 8th January Gordon won ‘European Elvis Champion 2011’ in association with Elvis Presley Enterprises. An appearance in Memphis followed where Elvis’ guitarist from 68-77 John Wilkinson revealed that Gordon “has the looks of ELVIS, he moves like ELVIS, and he sounds like ELVIS – he has my vote any day.” Two years later and Gordon celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the satellite broadcast of ‘Aloha from Hawaii’, presenting a full theatre production along with 20 musicians and singers in Lichfield on 19th January 2013. Touring nationally, until culminating with a sell-out show at the indigo at London’s 02, the show treated fans to an unforgettable evening replicating the magic that Elvis brought to the stage 40 years before. Collingwood calling Elvis The Collingwood Elvis Festival in Canada followed. Renowned as the largest Elvis festival in the world, 2014 saw it celebrate its 20th Anniversary with a very special guest – Priscilla Presley – making her first-ever Elvis festival debut. Gordon performed ‘You Gave Me A Mountain’ and ‘American Trilogy’ which inspired a standing ovation of 3000+ Elvis fans and resulted in him being crowned the 2014 Grand Champion. Shortly after the festival Gordon flew to Nashville. Here he signed a recording contract with the legendary Jerry Foster who, along with Bill Rice, was responsible for writing international hits for Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and Hank Williams to name a few. After closely working with Elvis, Jerry is a composer who knows when his ears have struck gold, like many who worked with Elvis, Jerry believes Gordon’s voice and moves combined are the closest we will ever hear to the man himself. Jerry and Gordon recorded the ‘Stirring up feelings’ album which was released worldwide. Originally written by Jerry for Elvis, the title track was yet another song The King would never have chance to record. However, Gordon’s greatest accomplishment to date was achieved on 19th August 2017 on the 40th Anniversary of Elvis’ passing. Gordon was crowned ‘Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artiste Champion 2017’ on stage at Graceland for the second time, competing against over 1000 global artists. Elvis is back in the building. He’s toured the world and now he’s coming home. ‘The King’s Voice’ tour transports you through time from the ‘68 special through to the Vegas era, breathing soul into ballads and those iconic jumpsuit numbers that set the stage on fire. There’s only one Elvis Presley and there’s only one artist who captures his spirit on stage – the inimitable Gordon Hendricks.
