Perth Symphony Orchestra present an entertaining evening of classical works by Russian composers.
The concert opens with Alexander Borodin's In The Steppes of Central Asia, a piece written to mark the silver anniversary of the reign of Alexander II of Russia, who did much to expand the Russian Empire eastward.
Sergei Prokofiev produced three orchestral suites, using the music from his ballet based on William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The orchestra will perform a selection of excerpts from these works.
Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 1, Winter Dreams is the composer's earliest notable work and took him almost two years to complete. It was well received at its first full performance in 1868, but surprisingly had to wait 15 years until 1883 for its next concert appearance. Today it is regarded as one of the most important markers in the development of symphonic writing during the 19th century.
