Art History Day School: Women Artists: From Gentilleschi To Emin

Have their been no great women artists? You may think this is the case, as women have largely been excluded from art history books. In fact, only as recently as the 1970s have they started to receive real recognition for their work.

This day school will explore art created by women from the Renaissance, to the present day. It will highlight women who were pioneering, independent and determined to receive recognition in a man's world. The session will also ask questions; why were women excluded from institutions of fine art, why have they been so under-represented and is their work different from their male contemporaries?

Key artists featured will include Artemisia Gentileschi, Sofonisba Anguissola, the female impressionists, the Glasgow Girls, Frida Kahlo, Gwen John and Tracey Emin.
