The Science of Cycling

With 1.2 billion cyclists worldwide (and at least half of those in Oxford!) we have come a long way from the days of the penny-farthing and the boneshaker. Join Max Gaskin, author of Cycling Science, to explore the science behind this eco-friendly popular mode of transport. How can you make your bike lighter with hydrogen, stay in your saddle and what does it take to be a Tour de France champion?.

From the aerodynamics of bicycle helmets to reaction times to finding the perfect bicycle frame, Max will draw on studies from disciplines such as physics, brain science, and biology. This is an event which will satisfy the curiosity of the casual recreational rider, or even the hard-core cycling enthusiast.”

Max Glaskin is an award-winning science and technology journalist with a special interest in cycling. He has contributed to a vast range of publications, including New Scientist, Reader’s Digest, and the Sunday Times.

In 2013 he published Cycling Science: How Rider and Machine Work Together – the ultimate reference book to educate professional riders and inspire recreational riders as well as challenge the scientifically curious.
