25 years after her sensational international breakthrough at Covent Garden, the Romanian soprano Angela Gheorghiu makes her debut with the Orchestra in her first public performance of Strauss's elegy for a lost world, his iconic Four Last Songs. Before it, Marios Papadopoulos conducts a swashbuckling overture from the other end of Strauss's career, Mahler's deeply moving protestation of love and the UK premiere of Giorgos Koumendakis's evocation of the Cretan instruments inspired by Irvin Yalom's idea of 'amor fati' - the love of fate.
