David Crystal OBE is the foremost writer and lecturer on the English language, with a worldwide reputation. In this talk, David will reflect on some of the language changes that have taken place in the past fifteen years, referencing his book, The Cambridge Encyclopedia of the English Language (3rd edition), he will offer fresh insights into the growing cultural identities of ‘new Englishes’ around the world, developments in digital language and the emergence of social media.
Join us earlier, at 4.30pm for the launch of The Oxford Handbook for Language Contact, edited by Anthony P. Grant. This new publication examines the ways in which one language can exert influence on another language, and how to assess that influence. With global scope and over 30 contributors, the handbook provides numerous fascinating examples to illustrate language-transfer.
