This show was rescheduled from 10th July 2021 (originally 21st February 2021).
Cutting-edge contemporary jazz trio GoGo Penguin perform music from their latest album, for the first time since its release in summer 2020.
Polyrhythms, beautiful melodies and thunderous sub-bass lines combine into luxurious soundscapes, influenced as much by electronic music as minimalist composition. With mesmerising lighting sculpted by Lewis Howell, the trio translate their impressive live show to a digital stage.
Pianist Chris Illingworth, bassist Nick Blacka and drummer Rob Turner have been releasing music together since 2014. Their freestyle jazz approach to performance melded with a plethora of influences has seen them hailed as the ‘Radiohead of British jazz’ (Line of Best Fit).

GoGo Penguin have managed to create a sound that is wholly their own - anthemic melodies from pianist Chris Illingworth hypnotise over rolling, skittering beats from drummer Rob Turner, all propelled forward by pulsing acoustic bass lines from Nick Blacka. Their instrumentation might be the archetypal piano trio but while the melodic, harmonic and structural ideas are influenced by both classical and jazz, the rhythms are drawn from across the rich history of the UK rave scene. It’s this meeting of opposites that makes their unique acoustic-electronica sound so exciting, drawing on a heady brew of influences from Brian Eno, Debussy and John Cage to Squarepusher, Aphex Twin and Massive Attack, with a dose of the grey, rain-streaked urbanity of Manchester thrown into the mix.
