Described by The Voice newspaper as ‘one of the Black officers who helped change the Met’, Dr Leroy Logan MBE is one of the founder members of the Black Police Association.

In 1982, Leroy was preparing for a career in science and medicine when he felt a strong call to join the police. It was unexpected, to say the least, and he knew he would face opposition from family and friends. Yet the call was too strong to ignore, reinforced by a friend who told him, ‘we need an organisation that looks like London, we need Black officers.’ Shortly after he submitted his application to join the Met, his father was viciously assaulted by two police officers.

During his 30 years at the Met, Leroy was always in the minority as a Black police officer, often on the receiving end of racism, bigotry, rumours, smear campaigns and abuse. Yet Leroy was determined to improve the relationship between the Met Police and the London Black community, to break down barriers and stereotypes, and to do his best to change the institution from the inside. Along the way, he made powerful allies and enemies, and rubbed shoulders with Princess Diana, Jack Straw, Sadiq Khan, Jesse Jackson and Cressida Dick among others.

To celebrate his debut book Closing Ranks: My Life as a Cop Leroy will be live in conversation, discussing a career dedicated to highlighting and addressing the lack of diversity in the Met, speaking out against inequalities and injustice, and his lifelong vocation to mentor young people. It promises to be an inspiring and eye-opening event.

This event has been curated in partnership with TGRG (The Girl in the Red Glasses) in aid of Black Cultural Archives.
