James Yorkston is a top Scottish Folk singer, songwriter, guitarist, pianist and published author, who has been releasing music on Domino Records since 2002. His debut album ‘Moving Up Country’ was ‘Rough Trade’s Album of the Year’.
James was an integral original member of the much lauded and hugely influential Fence Collective (which also included members King Creosote and KT Tunstall). In 2001, James made his first steps out of Fife as a solo artist, after he sent a demo cassette to Folk/Rock legend John Martyn asking for a support slot on the Edinburgh date of John’s upcoming tour.
John heard the cassette and offered James all 31 dates of the tour...
Throughout his career, James has released a succession of critically-acclaimed albums. He has toured all over Europe & North America and played at all of the major UK music festivals. He has also been featured many times on UK television.
Since 2015, James has programmed his diverse and acclaimed ’Tae Sup wi’ a Fifer‘ club nights in Kirkcaldy which have featured artists such as Dick Gaughan, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Steve Mason, Karine Polwart and Richard Dawson.
Another musical project in James’ canon was Yorkston Thorne Khan, a trio embracing jazz, indie-folk, krautrock, the poetry of Ivor Cutler, and Indian classical music. Their debut album ‘Everything Sacred’ gained multiple 5-star reviews and in 2016, Yorkston Thorne Khan were invited to perform at the Edinburgh International Festival.
In 2020, James recorded and released "The Wide, Wide River", an album he made with Sweden's Second Hand Orchestra. He has followed this up in 2023 with "The Great White Sea Eagle" which he also recorded with The Second Hand Orchestra but this time, he also had The Cardigan's Nina Persson on vocals.
Nina Persson is the lead vocalist and co-writer with Swedish Pop/Rock band, The Cardigans. Between 1992-2006, they enjoyed massive Worldwide success and released many hit records, some of which, will be familiar to you:

Featuring
James Yorkston
'A thousand times more haunting than anything the New Acoustic Movement ever dreamed of' said the NME. Indeed Scottish musician James Yorkston's music is haunting, but there is something else in his music which lifts him above the average acoustic singer/songwriter. At times he sounds like a rat-pack crooner, the next like a Scottish balladeer, and just when he's got down to his quietest, most fragile moment he'll break into one of the loudest acoustic guitar intervals you're likely to hear. James Yorkston is diversity at it's best, with all the quality of tradition and excitement of the new.
