The Pirates Of Penzance
Pirates of Penzance is a comic opera written by Gilbert & Sullivan. A swashbuckling farce of brilliant humour and razor sharp wit, featuring Sullivan's 'rollicking' score and W.S Gilbert's clever lyrics.
It tells the story of Frederic, a 21 year old pirate, who is celebrating the end of his apprenticeship as a pirate and plans to break free from the Pirate King and begin his courtship with the Major General's daughter, Mabel. However, because Frederic was born in leap year, on the 29th of February, technically he is only 'five - and a little bit over'.
As such, he is not free from his indentures and remains duty bound to his master, the Pirate King!
