Norfolk And Norwich Festival 2013: Royal Academy Of Music Concert Series
Programme:
Ysaÿe - Sonata for Solo Violin No. 5 Op. 27
Prokofiev - Five Mélodies Op. 35
Janá?ek - Violin Sonata
Brahms - Violin Sonata No. 1 in G Op.78
Szymanowski - Three Paganini Caprices Op. 40
The Latvian virtuosi Kristine Balanas and Reinis Zarins launch the Academy's series by exploring the expressive capabilities of the violin, from the tender lyricism of Brahms’s first sonata to Prokofiev’s haunting miniature ‘songs without words’ and the bleak restlessness of Janá?ek’s only violin sonata.
Along the way they commemorate two of the greatest violinists of all time: Eugène Ysaÿe, known as ‘the king of the violin’, was also a noted composer for the instrument; and the legendary Paganini, whose instantly recognisable theme from 24 Caprices is dazzlingly reinvented by Szymanowski.
