White Riot Tour Anniversary Celebration
One of the defining moments of the 1977 Punk revolution for Punk Rockers on Tyneside was the arrival of the Clash’s White Riot Tour at Newcastle University on Friday May the 20th, 1977. This was the first occasion that a band of the Clash’s stature in the punk movement had ventured as far north in England as Newcastle . The event was a sell out, and a huge success.
Unfortunately the night ended in controversy with two of the Clash’s members, singer and rhythm guitarist Joe Strummer, and drummer Topper Headon, being arrested and detained overnight in police cells for the disappearance of a pillow case from the band’s hotel. Controversial!
Moving forward to Friday May the 20th 2011, and in celebration of this years anniversary, the UK 's premier Clash tribute band perform the White Riot Tour set list in its original sequence with added material taken from the Clash's single releases of the 1977 - early 78 era. The Clash City Rockers have been performing at events like this in the U.K for almost ten years now.
