Tyneside Through The Pages
Tyneside Through the Pages: A Study in Provincial life - Middlemarch by George Eliot.
Join Dr Barbara Morden for a fascinating look at Tyneside’s history through the pages of some literary favourites in this series of six study days.
Sessions begin with an introduction to the themes and social issues raised in each classic and how these can be related to the story of Newcastle and the North East at the time.
Then discover a key painting of the period before exploring the stores and collections at the Discovery Museum. There will be plenty of food for thought and opportunity for discussion.
Eliot’s novel applies a metaphorical microscope to provincial society at the time of the Great Reform Bill. Like her we will explore the evolving social fabric of our region at that time.
In the process we will encounter politics, medical science and industry; witness the transformation of Newcastle’s urban landscape; visit the theatre, go to the Blaydon Races and find out just who was Harry Clasper.
Included in this study day: Victorian: costume store tour, Ian Whitehead short talk on rowing on the Tyne and proposed Tyneside Theatre visit.
