Songs of Love, War & Melancholy

Considered the last great natural horn virtuoso, Jacques-François Gallay was regarded as one of the leading musicians of the nineteenth century, with a career as a soloist in addition to his position as principal horn of the influential Paris Théâtre Italian.

These performances, celebrating the launch of Anneke Scott and Steven Devine’s new disc (Resonus Classics), include original works by Gallay and his contemporaries; Czerny, Rossini, Mendelssohn and Moscheles. These virtuosic compositions are all strongly influenced by both opera and lieder and all support Gallay’s firm belief that the natural horn was “another voice which sings”.

The “Songs of Love, War and Melancholy” tour visits a number of venues across the UK that boast historic pianos by makers such as Érard, Pleyel, Broadwood and Blüthner which partner early 19th century horns by Raoux.
