Gifts For The Gods: Animal Mummies Revealed

In Ancient Egypt, mummies weren’t just people. They were animals, too. Many different species were reared, killed and mummified, then offered as gifts to the gods. In this exhibition, scientists use modern techniques to challenge sentimental ideas about how Egyptians celebrated their pets, while revealing more about the world they lived in.

The Ancient Egyptian Animal Bio Bank project is dedicated to the study and analysis of animal mummies throughout the UK. It is led by biomedical Egyptian scientists at the University of Manchester and uses methods such as non-invasive imaging to examine mummies obtained by British collectors, explorers and archaeologists.
