Upclose II
This performance places two of Beethoven’s early String Quartets, Op.18 nos 3 and 4, alongside music by the Finnish composer Aulis Sallinen. A natural successor to Sibelius, Sallinen eschewed serialism, instead favouring a clear, diatonic style that often evokes the cold expanse of Finnish landscapes.
His Third String Quartet is a lyrical set of variations based on the mournful folk tune Poltoniemi Hintrik’s Funeral March, so get down early to drink it all in.
