Tom Barry, Kilmichael & the Manchester connection.
Ireland has this year been commemorating the centenary of the first Dáil Éireann and the subsequent outbreak of the War of Independence in 1919.
The Kilmichael Ambush was a major event in the war. The loss of seventeen Crown Forces in an engagement with the West Cork Brigade IRA in November 1920 illustrated to the British Government that it was facing a war of liberation in Ireland. Kilmichael was more than a physical battle. Using contemporary accounts and video footage, this event explains how Kilmichael became a battleground in the ongoing propaganda war between the two sides to the conflict, and how 'spin' and 'fake news' produced a controversy that continues to this day. The story is told through the experiences of Tom Barry, the famous commander of the West Cork Flying Column, and Lieutenant Bayley, a Chorlton man who died in the engagement.
