Kremerata Baltica

The piece is supplemented with video projections by Jonas Mekas, a filmmaker, poet and artist of Lithuanian origin; Rimas Sakalauskas, a video artist from Lithuani; Adam Magyar, a prominent figure in media arts; and Pingo van der Brinkloev; a digital artist from Denmark.

In 1997, Gidon Kremer created a new orchestra, Kremerata Baltica, comprising outstanding young players from the Baltic states, which soon won praise for the exuberance, energy and joy of their playing. A typically adventurous concert opens with Philip Glass’s Second Violin Concerto (a companion work to Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons) accompanied by a montage of evocative and original video images. In The Season’s Digest, living Russian composer, Alexander Raskatov weaves a colourful seasonal soundscape using motifs from popular piano pieces by Tchaikovsky. The programme closes with Piazzolla’s atmospheric evocation of the changing year in his native city captured through the vital rhythms of tango.

Programme:
Arvo Pärt - Passacaglia for violin and strings (4’)
Philip Glass - The American Four Seasons (Violin Concerto No.2)* (42')
Alexander Raskatov - The Seasons’ Digest (20')
Piazzolla - Four Seasons of Buenos Aires (arr. Desyatnikov) (26’)
