Story Boat Project With Voices Of The Sea

The Story Boat project is the creation of a miniature maritime memories museum from an upturned boat in which people's memories will be recorded and preserved.

Traditional wooden boatbuilder Gail McGarva in collaboration with local wheelwrights Rowland & Son are giving a new lease of life on land to a retired Dorset fishing boat by transforming her into enchanting oral history recording and exhibition space.

The Story Boat will be in residence outside the Marine from June to September.

Gail will be performing her new production 'Voices of the Sea' on Friday 8 September and Sunday 17 December at the Marine Theatre.

This unusual and atmospheric performance piece will draw you into a captivating world inhabited by characters such as the salt-ridden sailor, the lonely lighthouse keeper and the mischievous mermaid. Devised by Gail McGarva, traditional wooden boatbuilder from Lyme Regis, and inspired by her love of the sea, the piece features beautiful original songs with haunting harmonies along with fragments of narrative, performed by the Sea Chorus, a group of local singers brought together especially for this project. Alongside the performance and outside the theatre, audience members can visit the Story Boat, a miniature maritime memories museum created by Gail from an upturned Dorset fishing boat from 1923.
