Nanki-Poo, son of the Mikado of Japan, has fled his father's imperial court to escape an arranged marriage with Katisha, an elderly lady. Disguised as a traveling musician, he fell in love with Yum-Yum, but she was betrothed to her guardian Ko-Ko, a cheap tailor. Now a year later, on learning that Ko-Ko was condemned to death for flirting, Nanki-Poo has hurried back to the town of Titipu to claim Yum-Yum.
