Masters of Style: Ten Great Designers

SHORT COURSE: Explore the lives, work and legacy of ten of the greatest designers of the late 19th and 20th centuries whose ideas have helped to shape the appearance of the modern world.

We begin with William Morris and designers associated with the Arts and Crafts, and Victor Horta, Antoni Gaudi and Art Nouveau. We continue with the major figures of the Modern Movement including Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier,
Walter Gropius and Mies van der Rohe. The postmodern period is represented by Ettore Sottsass and Phillippe Starck. Each session will investigate the development of individual designer’s styles, a selection of key objects and commissions, and the artistic and cultural context for their work. Sessions will also consider the influence and impact of their careers. The course is taught by a selection of curators and design historians who have specialist knowledge of each designer’s work.

Thursdays, 25 April – 4 July 2013 (Half term: 30 May), 2:00pm - 4:30pm.
