As one of five principal kora playing families from West Africa, Sona Jobarteh stands on the mighty shoulders of her musical tradition, which she seamlessly mixes with Western instrumentation.

A special co-commission between Roundhouse and the Philharmonia for Roundhouse Three Sixty, this unique performance will see Gambian vocalist, multi-instrumentalist Jobarteh joined by the world-class symphony orchestra. As part of a programme she will curate the new commission that will fuse her background in both European and West African classical music.

Sona Jobarteh

Granddaughter of Griot Amadu Bansang Jobarteh and cousin to the celebrated Kora maestro Toumani Diabaté. She is the first female Kora virtuoso to come from a West African Griot family. Breaking away from tradition, she is a modern day pioneer in an ancient, male-dominated hereditary tradition that has been exclusively handed down from father to son for the past seven centuries. She has modernised the presentation of Kora music bringing a rhythmic edge to her compositions that fits her remarkable voice.
