Music Venue Trust Presents - Fightback

at The Roundhouse, London

This event has been and gone.

Following a number of stories about venues across the UK coming under threat or closing down, Music Venue Trust launches Fightback, a one-off evening of music to raise vital funds to create a new service to stop the closures.

The event will support the launch of a brand new nationwide service from Music Venue Trust which will directly stop music venue closures by tackling the number 1 cause of those closures; the cost and complexity of legal advice and expert opinion on planning, development, noise and licensing issues.

This Manchester outfit blend falsetto vocals with synths, guitars and discordant pop hooks. Quirky singles like 'Photoshop Handsome' have seen comparisons to XTC, Wild Beasts and Django Django, but the band also have a sound all of their own. Their 2011 debut release 'Man Alive' was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize and they have received three nominations for an Ivor Novello award. After an initial level of cult success, they broke through in 2013 with second album 'Arc' which reached no.5 on the UK album charts, followed by 2015's 'Get To Heaven' at no.7 and 2017's 'A Fever Dream' at no.5.

Ed Harcourt

Ed Harcourt appearing at this event

Much under-rated British singer-songwriter, who was nominated back in 2001 for his debut album 'Here Be Monsters'. His sometimes dark and melancholy lyrics blend with piano melody and beauty to deliver a sound not a million miles away from Crowded House and Jeff Buckley. Ed is also partial to collaborations. In 2013 he co-write and produced Sophie Ellis-Bextor's 'Wanderlust' album, while in 2015 he played piano on stage with The Libertines.

Sisteray appearing at this event

Sisteray, songwriters Niall Rowan (vocals) and Dan Connolly (guitar) and Mick Hanrahan (bass guitar) have set out their intention to re-write the indie guitar rule book. Sisteray came together out of their shared love for bands such as The Smiths, Velvet Underground, The Clash and The Replacements. This is proven in the upbeat melodies and lyrical observations of 21st century Britain, combined with high-octane live performances that have been key to making their live shows unmissable. They have recently built up their live audience through a series of #guerillagigs, using everything within their means to persuade promoters to let them have a first on slots at shows big and small, witnessed by Subculture describing: "The night began with Sisteray playing yet another spontaneous Camden show, their effortless guitar riffs and high energy proves that the boys are a force to be reckoned with". This was followed by an insistence that they were allowed to curate their own headline show, where they chose the bands and DJs, it was a sell-out success and was followed but memorable shows across the UK, including at Isle of Wight and Leeds Festivals and others in the summer of 2016. The bands belief and passion in their music, as well as their strong political views has been seldom seen since the days of The Clash; with Dan recently asked to appear on primetime BBC News, ITV and The Independent to voice his views on the recent Syria debate. Word is beginning to spread in the likes of BBC Radio 1, Radio X, Fresh on the Net, Louder Than War, Artrocker, BBC 6 Music, Subculture, Gigslutz, Time Out and The Londonist. "Gnarly... sounds like the golden age of 2000s UK indie" - Phil Taggart, BBC Radio 1 “...the band radiate the sense of Men On A Mission who engage both with their audience and the wider world beyond Camden” – Tom Robinson, BBC 6 Music ''Butt-kickin' New Punk'' - Chris Hawkins, BBC 6 Music "Punk rockers causing a buzz in their native London, sold out shows aplenty, and with a Rory Attwell (The Vaccines/Palma Violets) produced EP in the can and due for release soon, expect that to swell" - Fred Perry Subculture

Hannah Lou Clark

Hannah Lou Clark appearing at this event

'Recently acquiring a flat above a Quaker Meeting place, Hannah Lou Clark became entranced by the rituals almost literally beneath her feet. Fusing this with the same sense of dogged determination which runs through her music, the singer is already sparking furious speculation. Debut EP 'Silent Type' will be released on November 24th, with the title cut emerging online earlier this week. Oddly spiritual, it's a secular form of worship which favours direct interaction with her inner self; an emotional communion in which all is laid bare.'
