Max and Martin are old friends and business partners. They keep up a correspondence while Martin lives in his motherland of Germany, and Max (who is Jewish) manages their art gallery in San Francisco.
After WW1, Germany is in a state of political and economic turmoil. Caught in poverty, the society is desperately looking for a new beginning. And there comes Adolf Hitler - for many, a beacon of hope, for Martin ‘an electric shock’, which raises hopes and doubts alike. Now an official in the new regime, Martin can give voice to his innermost thoughts and feelings only in the letters to his best friend, Max.
However, their friendship is to be put to the test. Despite his earlier reservations and a liberal spirit, Martin eventually decides to toe the party line and to stop his correspondence with Max.
