Good Artists Borrow, Great Artists Steal

Nineteenth-century art has been described as being in 'permanent revolution'. In breaking away from certain artistic traditions, the Impressionist and the Post-Impressionist painters developed innovative and experimental art.

Yet, to what extent, if any, did radical artists such as Manet and Van Gogh reference or pay homage to the subjects, styles, and techniques of the art of the past?

Looking at a range of artists including Rembrandt, Velázquez, and Fragonard, and works in the National Gallery collection and beyond, this weekend course will explore the inspiration that 19th-century artists took from Old Master paintings.

Sessions include talks, case studies, and Gallery discussion.

Refreshments for both days are included. Lunch is not provided.
