A Live Rendition Of Thelonious Monk's Brilliant Corners

Theolonious Sphere Monk was an American jazz pianist and composer. As one of the most recorded jazz composer’s of all time, his career is regarded as one of the most influential, even making numerous contributions to the Jazz Standard repertoire. His “out there” style saw him become the house pianist at the Manhattan nightclub, Minton’s Playhouse. The club was crucial to the rise of the Bebop movement and here Monk was introduced to other greats of the genre.

The album Brilliant Corners was recorded in 1956 for Riverside records and beautifully highlighted his fast paced percussive technique. An a-list band consisting of saxophonists Charlie Parker and Sonny Rollins and drummer Max Roach were involved in the ambitious project. It received unprecedented critical acclaim and was even inducted to the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.
