Rachmaninov Vespers
Rachmaninov Vespers plus works by Victoria, Grieg, Lotti and Gabrieli
With their exquisite harmonies, Rachmaninov’s Vespers has been praised as the composer's finest work and ‘the greatest musical achievement of the Russian Orthodox Church’. First performed a hundred years ago in 1915, the hauntingly moving All-Night Vigil or Vespers are based on settings taken from the Russian Orthodox all-night vigil ceremony.
It was one of Rachmaninov’s two favourite compositions of his own, along with The Bells, which was sung by CEFC and the BBC Symphony Chorus under Edward Gardner at the 2014 BBC Proms.
Also featured in this concert: Victoria: O Quam Gloriosum; Grieg: Ave Maris Stella; Lotti: Crucifixus; Gabrieli: Jubilate Deo
