Michael Nyman 70th Birthday Concert: Michael Nyman
For the first major event of his 70th birthday year, Michael Nyman has chosen to feature two of his concertos and the first new series of symphonies with the RPO.
His first concerto, Where the Bee Dances, for soprano saxophone, was written in 1991 and has recently been substantially revised for this concert. While one of the more recent of his 12 concertos, for violin, was written a few years ago for Gidon Kremer and is receiving its UK premiere in this concert.
The concert is a world premier of Nyman's Symphony No.2, one of a [projected] cycle of 19 symphonies.
The RPO are conducted by Josep Vicent who has worked extensively with Michael Nyman on several projects in recent years, including the recording of Symphony No.2.
The concert will be introduced by BBC Radio 3's Petroc Trelawny.
As one of Britain's most innovative and celebrated composers, Michael Nyman's work encompasses operas and string quartets, film soundtracks and orchestral concertos. Far more than merely a composer, he's also a performer, conductor, bandleader, pianist, author, musicologist and now a photographer and film-maker. Although he's far too modest to allow the description 'Renaissance Man', his restless creativity and multi-faceted art has made him one of the most fascinating and influential cultural icons of our times.
