NME Awards Show 2014: The Strypes + Southern + Raglans
The NME Awards Shows are back in 2014, taking place at various venues around London between February 2nd-25th with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Warpaint, Drenge and Swim Deep among the bands playing.
The NME Awards themselves return to London’s O2 Academy Brixton on February 26th, in partnership with city of Austin, Texas. The city of Austin will also sponsor the forthcoming NME Awards Tour and London NME Awards shows along with the Best International Band category at the event itself.
This event takes place at O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire, which has achieved Silver Status for disabled access from Attitude Is Everything.
Young upstarts The Strypes are a four piece rhythm and blues band hailing from Cavan, Ireland, formed in 2011 by Ross Farrelly (lead vocals/harmonica), Josh McClorey (lead guitar/vocals), Pete O'Hanlon (bass guitar/harmonica) and Evan Walsh (drums).
The group viciously hammer out no-nonsense blues influenced by the likes of Dr. Feelgood, Chuck Berry, The Yardbirds, The Rolling Stones, Little Walter and Bo Diddley. They have picked up some famous fans, with the likes of Jeff Beck, Paul Weller, Noel Gallagher, Dave Grohl, Roger Daltrey and Miles Kane all expressing their love of the band.
The Strypes tour dates
Southern are a musical duo consisting of brother/sister Thom and Lucy Southern. The music is a mixture of Alternative, Acoustic/Electric Indie which drifts into a modern style of folk/bluegrass.
Musically, their ambition is to mix up folk, blues, hip hop and alternative pop-rock. They love everyone from Nick Drake and John Martyn to Beck and Danger Mouse; as a result, their music is a blend of finger-picking guitar techniques and hip hop loops and beats.
Southern tour dates
Formed in a festival tent in 2010 Dublin based 4 piece band Raglans launched the same year. Raglans blaze a trail of muscular new wave guitars, gritty pop melodies and uplifting indie folk arrangements that hops, skips and jumps with a skill and confidence far beyond their short lifespan and brought them The King Kong Club crown late in 2011, the prize, a recording session with Morrissey’s co- writer/arranger/guitarist Boz Boorer in his Sierra Alta studio.
Raglans are Stephen Kelly (lead vocals, guitar, banjo, mandolin), Ros Horan (bass, backing vocals),
Conn ORunaidh (drums, backing vocals) and Liam Morrow (lead guitar, mandolin, backing vocals).
