The Lighthouse

The Royal Opera presents Peter Maxwell Davies’s chamber opera The Lighthouse directed by Jette Parker Young Artist Greg Eldridge in the Linbury Studio Theatre as part of the annual Meet the Young Artists Week.

Based on a true story of an abandoned lighthouse in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, this contemporary opera tells the story of the mysterious disappearance of three lighthouse keepers.

Three officers are questioned about their discovery of an abandoned lighthouse. They begin to re-enact the last hours of the missing keepers. As fog envelops the lighthouse, the keepers’ fears surface.

The Young Artists present Peter Maxwell Davies’s 1980 chamber opera The Lighthouse, in a new production directed by Jette Parker Associate Director Greg Eldridge, in one of the highlights of Meet the Young Artists Week

Maxwell Davies wrote his own libretto for this haunting, claustrophobic work, taking inspiration from the mysterious real-life disappearance of three lighthouse keepers in the Flannan Isles in 1900.

The Lighthouse is a modern classic and is the only opera to have been given three different productions in the Linbury Studio Theatre.
