The muscular elegance of Beethoven’s Sonata No. 1 Op. 5 is contrasted with the expansive drama of Prokofiev’s own Sonata in C.

The second half is devoted to the cello transcription of Cesar Franck’s magnificent Violin Sonata, a celebration of love.
