The traumatic impact of war can burn memories into the brain: the desire to protest, to memorialise and to pay tribute to human courage has inspired composers down the ages. In this special programme the Brodsky Quartet bring together responses to wars from the last hundred years, from the First Quartet of Erwin Schulhoff, who ended his life in a concentration camp and Shostakovich’s response to the Allied bombing that devastated Dresden, to George Crumb’s iconic protest against the Vietnam War, Black Angels. Karen Tanaka’s work recalls the Balkan conflict, while Dave Brubeck’s Regret is a poignant reflection on the attacks of September 11 2001.
