Rayne Shoes Study Day

Shoes on pedestals are á la mode this summer, with a host of exhibitions and displays at the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Design Museum and the Fashion and Textile Museum. Join us at this special study day to discuss a century of high fashion British footwear by Rayne, the stars who wore the shoes, the designers who made them and the stories behind the scenes at the Bond Street store.

The Rayne Shoes Study Day speakers include:

- Beatrice Behlen is senior curator of Fashion & Decorative Arts at the Museum of London
- Deirdre Murphy is senior curator at Historic Royal Palaces with a specialism in court dress
- Thomas Messel is one of England’s most eminent furniture designers, a nephew of Oliver Messel and author of Oliver Messel: In the Theatre of Design
- Michael Pick is guest curator of Rayne Shoes for Stars and author of the accompanying book (2015).
- Jane Pritchard is curator of dance for the Victoria and Albert Museum
- Lucia Savi is research assistant on the V&A’s exhibition Shoes: Pleasure and Pain
- Rebecca Shawcross has been the shoe resources officer at Northampton Museum and Art Gallery since 1998. She is responsible for the Designated Shoe Collection

The study day will explore how Rayne developed from its origins as a theatrical costumier to hold three Royal Warrants as shoemakers to three successive British Queens and became renowned as a benchmark for excellence in design.
