Life on Foot: Fashion Heritage Walking Tour
Explore the fashion heritage of SE1 in this fascinating walking tour of London’s oldest leather making district, which is organised to coincide with the exhibition Camper Shoes at the Design Museum (opens 13 May) and the display Rayne Shoes for Stars at the Fashion and Textile Museum.
The leather and wool trades, as well as hat manufacture and glue production have historic associations in London SE1. Linked to the leather industry, shoe making as well as jam and biscuit factories flourished. Many of these traditional industries have disappeared, but Bermondsey Street is a designated conservation area and the area between the Fashion and Textile Museum and the Design Museum in Shad Thames retains much of its architectural character. A number of artists and creative industries are based here. The walk highlights local sites of interest, as well as insights into how and why the local industries have changed.
The walk lasts approximately one hour and is suitable for all ages. The ticket includes entry to both Rayne Shoes for Stars and Riviera Style at the Fashion and Textile Museum and Camper Shoes at the Design Museum.
Schedule:
- 11:15am: Meet at Fashion and Textile Museum to register for walk with 45 minutes to see RAYNE Shoes for Stars and Riviera Style exhibition
- Midday: Walking tour departs Fashion and Textile Museum
- 1:00pm: Arrive Design Museum to see Camper exhibition
