Dan Shake has achieved something many can only dream of. Becoming the first producer with no Detroit heritage or residency to land a release on Moodymann's prestigious record label Mahogani Music, with his debut single ‘3 AM Jazz Club’. Since then, he has gone from strength to strength, collaborating with talented newcomer Medlar, and releasing a slew of superb productions and edits.
Citing the layered percussive rhythms of Afrobeat, the soul-drenched sampling of J Dilla and the dark, dense grooves laid out by contemporary producers Flying Lotus and Motor City Drum Ensemble as influences, his productions maintain an infectious groove.
'Created in the isolation of the British countryside, Desert Sound Colony is inspired by faintly remembered sounds and almost forgotten memories. The thread running through the melodic, visceral tracks touch on a sense of melancholy present within us all.
Occupying a space somewhere between ‘60s Psychedelia and the pulsating sounds of future-clubs, Desert Sound Colony is both infectious and ethereal, shrouding the listener in a gentle, rhythmical canopy.'
