Opera Lyrica

Opera Lyrica presents a concert of Lully, Purcell and Blow to demonstrate the influence of Louis XIV in Europe in general, and England in particular. Featuring up-and-coming musical talent, the programme will aim to show the impact that the reign of the Sun King had on music in 17th-century France, and how that in turn changed the way contemporaneous English composers approached their own compositions.

The concert is to accompany a conference taking place on the same date, hosted by the Victoria and Albert Museum, entitled Lambrequins and Luxury: Ornament in the time of Louis XIV and beyond.

Marking the tercentenary of the close of Louis XIV’s reign this one-day conference will explore the tenets, impact and dissemination of the Louis XIV style in Britain and Europe. Papers given by a range of international speakers will examine the work of key designers, ornamentalists and craftsmen who contributed to this style including Charles Le Brun, André-Charles Boulle and Daniel Marot. Also featuring a short introduction by Dr Sandra Tuppen, Curator of Music Manuscripts at the British Library. who specialises in the music of Matthew Locke and Henry Purcell, as well as French influence on English music of the 17th century. We are delighted to have Dr Tuppen opening the concert.

There will also be a drinks reception held in St Wilfrid's Hall, opposite the Oratory, after the event.
